Downloading eBooks to a Kindle

Follow these detailed instructions to enjoy eBooks on your Amazon Kindle. Visit the Ohio eBooks Project to find books to borrow. If you have any questions, either call the library at (419) 287-4012

Getting Started

  1. From either your Kindle (if it has WiFi or wireless capability) or your computer (if your Kindle doesn’t have WiFi or if you find it easier to work on a computer), go to www.pemberville.org

On the library’s main page you can click anywhere on the Ohio eBook Project; this will take you to Overdrive’s website. You can also go directly to Overdrive by typing in http://ohdbks.lib.overdrive.com

  2. Begin by logging into your Overdrive account. Click the Sign in button on top of the page. You’ll be asked to click on your library name. Scroll down to Pemberville  Library and click on it. Next type in your library card number from the back of your card. You don’t need to put in the spaces, just the numbers.

  3. Now that you are logged in, the next step is to browse the collection of eBooks.

    * Note that the collection also contains mp3 audiobooks. Overdrive audiobooks are not yet supported for the Kindle.

Finding Books for the Kindle

  1. The simplest way to browse the collection of eBook titles is to click on the  Home button to the left of Sign in. This will take you back to the main page of Overdrive. There you’ll see two columns. The left side is Learn About and the right side is View All.

  2. On the right side (View All), click Kindle Books. This will show you all the books we have in our collection. You can sort by title, creator (author), release date, etc. by clicking on the Sort By categories. You can also search for specific books, authors, or subjects by typing in the box labeled Search within results.

  3. Details on each title will be available if you click on the cover or the name of the title. If a book is checked out, you may place a hold on it by clicking Join the Waiting List. You will be notified via email when it is available for checkout.

Downloading Books to Your Kindle

  1. When you find an available title that you would like to check out, click on Add to Cart below and to the right of the title, next to where it says “Kindle Book.” If you are picking up a hold book, go to Overdrive’s main page and click on My Digital Account. Click on My Digital Holds, then add the book to your Cart.

  2. Click on My Digital Cart at the top of the page. Now click on Proceed to Checkout below the title in your Cart.

  3. From the Check Out page, specify the lending period (7 to 14 days) and click the Confirm Check Out button. You are now on the Download page. Click the Get for Kindle button to complete your checkout.

  4. A new browser window will now open called Get Your Public Library Loan, showing you your title within the Amazon Kindle page. Click the Get library book button on the right side of the screen, in the green box. If you were not already logged into your Amazon.com account, you will now be prompted to log in with your email address and Amazon password. Make sure that you log into the same account that you registered with your Kindle.

  5. On the screen that follows, use the pull-down menu to specify which device or Kindle application you would like to have your title delivered to. Most users will see the name of their Kindle displayed and will leave that as the default destination. Now click the Continue button.

  6. You should now see a Thanks! Page. Your checkout is complete.

    * If you have WiFi, your Kindle will download your eBook the next time it connects to Wi-Fi.

    * If you don’t have WiFi or would rather download directly from the computer, you can attach your Kindle to your computer using the USB cable and click Download Now. If it asks you where to save the file, choose your Kindle by name and save it in the folder named ‘documents’.

  7. On your Kindle, your book will show on your Home screen as a new title

Returning Kindle Books

  1. To return a title early, use your computer to log into your Amazon account. Use the navigation menu in the left-hand column to select Your Account or Your Digital items, then Manage Your Kindle. You should see a list of the titles in your Kindle. Across from the name of the library eBook you would like to return, use the Actions drop-down menu to select “Return this book.”

  2. You will also use this method to delete a title whose loan period has expired.

  3. To delete an expired title from the Kindle itself, use the 5-way controller to highlight the book, then click the controller to the side. Now click the select button to activate the remove from device alert that has appeared on the screen.
